Serious Red Wines from Majorca!

Every now and then we come across a wine that makes us sit up and take notice – something that strikes us with its enjoyability, and yet at the same time offers an exciting new experience.  These two wines tick both boxes!

Majorcan wines are never going to be seen in supermarkets or, indeed, anywhere except in small specialist Spanish wine outlets.  Most Majorcan wine is consumed locally by tourists, and this combined with high land prices means that there is no incentive for winemakers to export their wines. As a result the wines are never going to be cheap.  However, we believe that they stand up well on their own merits, and offer real value to the enthusiast.

This offer comes from Majorca’s second largest producer, with 50 hectares of vines.  The wines are made from a combination of local varieties, chiefly the Manto Negro, supplemented by a little Cabernet and Syrah.  The Manto Negro is not dissimilar to the Grenache, and produces wines of real substance and quality, when the yields are kept low.  Vinification is in a modern fashion to produce a delicious style of wine that sits half way between Spain and Italy, having the ripe/silkiness of the former and the structure of the latter.

We are offering a Mixed Case of 6 bottles of each -

Macià Batle Tinto 2006                                                                                                                                   £6.95 Binissalem, Majorca                                                                                                                                                 Made predominantly from the Manto Negro variety, with some Callet, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, this is a medium/light cherry in colour.  There is a mouthwatering nose of cherries with a hint of vanilla – it has just two months’ in American oak. This is followed by juicy mouthful of cherry fruit, with undertones of chocolate and minty/herby flavours.  At the finish there is very little tannin, but lovely fresh acidity, which makes this a rare combination of immediate drinkability and complexity.

Macià Batle Crianza 2005                                                                                                                                £8.95 Binissalem, Majorca                                                                                                                                                         The older vines of Manto Negro, Cabernet and Syrah, which produce a more concentrated wine, are used in the Crianza. This is then aged for 24 months in a mix of French and American oak barrels.  It is a deeper cherry red with reflections of violet.  There are aromas of black cherries with hints of smoky oak, while on the palate it is beautifully silky in texture, with flavours of black cherry and forest berries underpinned with hints of dark chocolate and balsamic. It’s almost Black Forest gateau in a glass!

 Mixed Case Price : £95.40
