Château Lamothe Vincent

Bordeaux at its Best!

This lovely vineyard is situated in the gentle rolling hills of the pretty Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux, surrounded by copses of mature trees. Bordeaux has been blessed with two fantastic vintages - 2009 and 2010.  When 2009 was universally hailed as the best vintage for over 50 years, the journalists didn't think things could get any better, but they didn't reckon the following vintage of 2010.  When we visited the Vincent family again in the Spring of  this year to taste these new vintages, we were bowled over by the quality - not only of the whites but also of the fabulous reds!

Fabien Vincent has used his New Zealand experience to produce ultramodern juicy Sauvignon Blancs, with delicious gooseberry flavours which are enhanced by the judicious addition of Semillon and Sauvignon Gris, filling out the middle palate.  These are thoroughly modern Sauvignons, which leap out of the glass and matches many New Zealand wines, costing much more.

He has focussed just as much care on his reds.  His brother Christophe has transformed the vineyard, massively improving the quality of the fruit. For varietal expression, fermentations will take place at around 24°C. This can go up to 32°C if greater structure is required.  They have invested in the very expensive technology of Micro-oxygenation,  This process involved bubbling microscopic bubbles of 02 under very carefully under strict computer-monitored conditions to develop the texture and stabilize the colour of the wine. Then, ageing on lees with stirring once a week lasts 2 to 10 months, with a view to enhancing ripe and soft flavours and increasing length on the finish.

All their wines deliver much more quality than their prices suggest.  Their wines continue to win medals and awards year after year at such prestigious wine fairs as Paris, as well as having regular mentions in Guide Hachette and Decanter magazine.

We have put together a mixed case of four bottles each of these three delicious wines -

Château Lamothe-Vincent Sauvignon Blanc 2010                                                                                                  £6.00 AC Bordeaux sec                                                                                                                                                                 This is now made from 85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Semillon.  The carefully controlled cold fermentation results in wonderful  leafy, gooseberry aromas. It is full of racy passion fruit and gooseberry on the palate with a crisp pineapple and citrus finish displaying mouthwatering zingy acidity.  Great as an aperitif or with fish dishes.

Château Lamothe-Vincent Rouge Merlot 2010                                                                                                      £6.45 AC Bordeaux

Fabien has made this from 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon with temperature controlled fermentation and part of the wine is aged in older, used French oak casks. It is deep in colour with a ripe black fruits and a hint of oak on the nose.  This leads into a generous mouthful of black cherries and cassis, finishing with a touch of liquorice and soft, ripe, gentle tannins.  Delicious now but will keep well for another two to three years!

Château Lamothe-Vincent Rouge Intense 2009                                                                                                     £6.95 AC Bordeaux

More mature than the 2010, this is equally deep in colour.  It is made from 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc, which is aged in some newer French oak barrels.  It has a spicier nose dominated by intense fruit aromas of cassis and strawberry, while on the palate is very concentrated with ripe black cherry flavours and a hint of toasty oak and ripe tannins at the finish.  A more complex wine, which is lovely now but will age well over the next five years.  Gold medal winner at Paris 2010!
