Four top Crus from Beaujolais!

Vaux-en-Beaujolais

There can be few more enjoyable pursuits in life than sitting on the slopes of the vineyards facing Vaux-en-Beaujolais, while enjoying a picnic of goats’ cheese and charcuterie accompanied by a sublime glass of Jean-Marc’s award-winning Brouilly!.  The granite and schistous terroir of the 10 magnificent Beaujolais crus starts in the northern part of region at Vaux, which is the village that the famous novel of Clochemerle was based on.  It is on these soils that Gamay achieves its highest expression with concentration, character, individuality and great style.

Last year’s new find from Chénas and Fleurie sold out within two weeks, so this year we visited Jean-Marc Lafont early and we managed to buy four of his superb crus, before they sold out!  The 2005s are magnificent, having the same concentration as the wonderful 2003s but differing by being fresher and crisper.

There really is nowhere else in the wine world that can produce such sheer enjoyment in a glass from the Gamay and currently these Cru Beaujolais represent marvellous value for money. They are all bursting with ripe fruit and are ready to enjoy now….

A Mixed Case consists of 3 bottles of each of -

Régnié, “La Ronze” 2005                                                                                                                               £6.40 Lafont                                                                                                                                                                     Like all these four wines, this is deep in colour.  Those of you who have enjoyed M Bernado’s Domaine de la Ronze over the years will love this. It comes from the same slopes but the average age of the vines is 60 years old, with yields of only 20hl/ha. It has lovely concentration, vivid damsony flavours and good length with soft ripe tannins underpinning it.

Brouilly, Domaine de Bel Air 2005                                                                                                                  £6.95 Lafont                                                                                                                                                          Deservedly winning two stars in Guide Hachette, this is classic Brouilly.  It is full of plummy fruit, with hints of cherries, very soft and round on the palate, ending with lovely fresh acidity.  Absolutely delicious!

Morgon, “Côte du Py” 2005                                                                                                                          £6.95 Lafont                                                                                                                                                                      His Morgon comes from the slopes of the famous Côte de Py. It has a wonderful nose of ripe cherries, which leads into a mouthful of crushed red and black cherries. All this is underpinned with a hint of minerality from the granite terroir, and it finishes long. Liquid Summer pudding on steroids!

Fleurie, La Madone 2005                                                                                                                              £7.65 Lafont                                                                                                                                                                Finally, this Fleurie displays all the characteristics that make it the most distinctive and famous of the 10 crus.  A perfumed, floral nose – lovely, soft, ripe, silky fruit – great elegance – a long finish, once again with a hint of minerality. Sublime!
