Chateau La Bastide, Corbières Between the towns of Narbonne and Carcassonne, in the heart of the Corbières appellation stands the imposing Château la Bastide, built around 1830. Guilhem Durand bought the property in 1989 and has a massive 100 hectares under vine. He is a great innovator, and has planted numerous different grape varieties. We have enjoyed both his reds and whites in the past, and they have proved very popular with members. His whites are always wonderfully well made, and this is reflected in the way they all sell out within weeks of being bottled.
Guilhem passionately believes in
quality. He keep yields low,
replaces old vines with superior and more distinguished grape varieties, and only
pick the grapes at optimum maturity.
Steady investment over the years has ensured that the most modern vinification equipment is used and Guilhem has recently completed a modern cellar for aging the wines in oak barrels
This Spring we called in to visit Guilhem and Anne-Marie and try their new vintages. On this occasion three wines really impressed us - his lovely Corbières Blanc 2009, a stunning Viognier 2009 in the whites, and the superb red Pinot Noir-based Plénitude 2007! We have put together a mixed case of three of them. We think that they are remarkable value for money and pure sunshine in a glass! A mixed case consists of 4 bottles of each of the following 3 wines – Domaine La Bastide Viognier 2009 £6.50 Vin de Pays d’Oc This is Viognier at its best with a floral nose reminiscent of honesuckle. On the palate it has lovely mouthfeel with flavours of white peach and apricots. It ends with gentle acidity and a hint of peach stones leads into a long finish. Delicious!
Domaine La Bastide Blanc 2009 £6.50 AC Corbières Made from 50% Roussanne, 25% Bourboulenc and 25% Vermentino, this wine is cold-fermented but with the addition of 15% barrel-fermented wine to add complexity and softness. It has a delicate honeyed, floral nose, which leads into peachy, floral, honeyed fruit with gentle acidity at the finish and good length.
Domaine La Bastide Plénitude 2007 £7.25 Vin de Pays d' Hauterive Guilhem had the foresight to plant Pinot Noir, the classic Red Burgundy grape, in his Corbières vineyard a number of years ago. In the South this grape ripens more fully, where it can make lovely soft fruity wines, which bear more than a passing resemblance to Burgundy. However, Guilhem has imaginatively combined 60% Pinot Noir with 20% Syrah and 20% Merlot. This is then aged in one year old barrels, to add complexity with subtle oak flavours. The result is a stunningly original wine!
Medium/deep in colour, this has a lovely ripe Pinot Noir nose. On the palate, it is soft, juicy and full of black cherry, Kirsch flavours, with good concentration, soft ripe tannins and nice length. It is all too easy to drink but will age brilliantly over the next five years if you wish to keep it!
